Knock Knock Joke Day

Did you know that along with Halloween today is Knock Knock Joke Day? I learned that and now you know it too.

So corny but here are a few...

Knock knock
Who's there?
Boo
Boo who?
Don't cry it's only a joke.
(Probably the first one every one learned.)

Knock knock
Who's there?
Tank
Tank who?
You're welcome

Knock knock
Who's there?
Cargo
Cargo who?
No car go "beep beep"

Knock knock
Who's there?
A little old lady
A little old lady who?
I didn't know you could yodel.

These are a few that I remember. What about you? Tell me a knock knock joke in the comments. We can always use a laugh.

Back with more again soon.
Take care and stay cozy!
and Happy Halloween!

Permanent Damage and No Apology

Above you see a bunch of silver coins. One ounce silver eagles from 2012 actually. My mother, against my advice, bought 500 of them for about $35 a coin and entrusted my brother to keep them until she passed away and then 100 coins would go to each of her 5 children. Evidently wherever my brother kept them was not waterproof and the damage is obvious. We know it was water damage because when he dumped 300 of the coins at an attorney's office the water was still in the storage tubes the coins were in. He basically dropped them off and ran keeping back 200 coins for him and my other brother. No apology for the condition of the coins, just an emailed demand for a receipt from the attorney 2 weeks later.

My sister, as executor, took the coins to a shop to get an opinion on the situation. As of right now, the value of damaged coins is in the low $20 range. Using Tarnex to remove some of the damage could increase the value maybe a dollar but no more than that. Jim and I tried that when I got home from my girl's trip to the Grand Canyon and Williams Arizona. You can see the results below. The damage is permanent. The coins will and can never be returned to mint condition. I get that things happen but at the very least my brother should have manned up and explained and apologized. It is what Mom would expect from him.

October 27th is Navy Day

I am the wife of a Navy veteran. He served 20 years, 3 months and 1 day. I married him in his 3rd year of service. This day, October 27th is Navy day and the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt who built our modern navy and made it the best in the world. That continues today. On this day think about those who serve on land and at sea and thank a sailor for being brave enough to sign over their life to our country.

Strangest Thing Ever!

See that right up there in the picture? There is a story and a mystery attached to it. My sisters and I started today on a train ride from Williams AZ to the Grand Canyon. After spending about 3 hours wandering Grand Canyon Village, we headed back to board the train for the return trip. We got to the train a bit early and with my leg still hurting a lot I sat down on a log to wait until it was time to board. I started taking a couple pictures of a pretty yellow flower on a bush next to me. Looking down I saw this mini urn. I checked inside and discovered ashes still in it. I think someone brought it to scatter the ashes at the canyon and somehow lost it. We turned it over to train personnel to try and find who may have lost it.

So, if you are reading this, I really want to know if you have ever come across anything stranger while on vacation? Please leave a comment.

A Day of Travel

I spent part of today driving and part riding. I have ended up in Northern Arizona with my sisters. While chatting on the porch where we are staying several of the animals you see below wandered by. I think these are some of the first deer I have seen since leaving Wyoming.

Some Relief

I tried a different video this morning to get some relief from my sciatic pain. The video is embedded below. If you can't see it in your RSS reader, come to the blog website. This one worked really well. I was able to walk through the grocery store with Jim a little while ago. The relief was not 100% though. I still have an ache in my lower leg that is very stubborn, but I can deal with that. I plan on using these stretches 2 to 3 times a day. It just takes a minute or so and the feeling after is so much better.

What a Pain!

My discomfort continues and fills my awake time and disturbs my sleep. The morning I went down a YouTube rabbit hole to look for videos with exercises or yoga routines the are meant to bring relief and maybe prevent a flare of this pain from happening again. I've embedded the video I used this morning. I plan on doing this one twice a day to see if I have any improvement in my symptoms. I do know that immediately after I finished my left leg felt pretty good for maybe an hour of so but that is more relief that I have had in the last 3 days.

Is this what they mean about getting old not being for sissies? Maybe but I am willing to work to make myself better and stronger and not sit around using this as an excuse to do nothing.

If you are in your 60's like me or beyond, what do you do the help have the life you want in your last decades?

National Friends of Libraries Week

Since 2005, the American Library Association has promoted National Friends of Library Week to recognize the dedication of friends groups across the nation.

I didn't know until this morning that we are nearly at the end of National Friends of Libraries Week. This sounds like such a great organization. I love libraries and feel strange about not having a library card for one of the first times in my life. The reason is that I am reading through the bins of books that came to me as a gift. I do hope to finish up those books in the next couple months. After that I will be heading to my nearest library. It is the best and most economical way to keep up with the latest books. When property taxes are paid a portion always goes to the library and I really support this. A well read citizen is a treasure for society. I really believe that. Those who are unread are afraid of what may be discovered in a book and generally have very narrow and limited and fearful views of life. Sometimes I pity them but mostly I just want them to start reading. Okay off the soapbox now.

When was the last time you were in a library? For me it has been too long but I plan to fix that.

A Pain in the Hip

No cute images today. No fun post about a National Day or Month. No things to share that were found while browsing online. No recently read books.

Today my left hip is painful and kept me from sleeping well and woke me up way too early. The pain is a burning sensation in my outer hip and sometimes goes down my outer thigh to my knee. I don't know if it is related but about where a calf length sock would hit, I feel like a tight ring is around my leg. Not really painful, just weird.

I won't be collecting a pinecone on a walk today. I am instead going to use Advil and ice to see if I can stop this. I have some things to look forward to in the next week, so I need to get this nonsense stopped.

The Road Towards Home by Corinne Demas

During my recent trip back east, I finished reading The Road Towards Home (affiliate link) written by Corinne Demas. From this books page on Amazon you see the following description.
"In this witty, warm novel by award-winning author Corinne Demas, unexpected changes bring two retirees together on a voyage of self-discovery from past regrets to the true meaning of happily ever after."

Those words are just right for this book. Witty and warm is the perfect description of the interactions between the main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed following Noah and Cassandra's path to happily ever after. I highly recommend this one. It even includes a charming large dog, a Newfie, if I remember correctly, who wins over Noah in the end.

National Pasta Day

Everyone I know loves pasta even if they don't see it as a healthy part of their diet. I love it too. My favorite pasta dishes to make are spaghetti and baked macaroni and cheese. I do kitchen sink pasta dishes too with maybe Italian sausage or chicken, whatever vegetables are around and a random sauce either creamy or tomato based or pesto or just oil and balsamic vinegar and some cheese and that would most likely be parmesan. That's a kitchen sink kind of sentence right there, sorry.

I chose to do this quick post about pasta because it happens to be National Pasta Day! Guess you know what will very likely be a part of tonight's dinner. What are you having?

National Dictionary Day

First off I missed writing yesterday. No reason or excuse, just didn't get around to it. I did however have a nice lunch with two of my grandchildren. It was nice to see them and here they are doing so well.

Now about today, it is National Dictionary Day. I learned that just a few minutes ago from NationalDayCalendar.com

I have two stories about dictionaries in my past.

The first as a child, this was in the olden days of not internet and party line landlines, I used to open the dictionary we had to a random page and write down on paper the words so that I could learn the definitions and spellings. Nerdy, I know, but couldn't get in any trouble doing it.

Second was as an adult and my son and his friend were in middle school. The got out a dictionary we had at home and tried to find a word I couldn't define. They failed and were impressed but I must tell you that it was a student dictionary so that made the task easier for me.

So, reader if you are out there, do you have any fond memories of school days and "real book" dictionaries? Please share, I would love to hear from you.

Annular Solar Eclipse October 14, 2023

Like many in the US, I got to see the eclipse today. Called a ring of fire eclipse by some but that is not what I saw. This picture was taken in Salt Lake City. Pretty but not fiery.

I didn't have glasses to protect my eyes, so a quick picture is all I got. I think this is the third solar eclipse I have seen in my lifetime. I miss nearly all of the lunar ones since I like sleeping too much to get up in the middle of the night.

Did any of you see this amazing event? Pictures or thoughts?

On This Day

On this day, before leaving Pennsylvania, we made a stop in Lititz. This charming town has lots of delightful shops and a girl's school, Linden Hall with some very prestigious alumni. Lititz is also the town with the oldest commercial hard pretzel bakery. You can take a tour, make a pretend pretzel out of play dough, learn all about the history of the Sturgis family and their pretzel business and of course browse a gift shop on your way out.

I've got a very early plane ride coming up in the morning, so I'll go for now. I got this post up to keep my daily writing streak going. It has been 120 days so far.

A Christmas Quilt

I have long wanted to have throw sized quilts for all the holidays to put over my couch. I thought I would make them myself, but I have no problem showing off the excellent skills of others. I bought this Christmas themed quilt today in Intercourse, Pennsylvania.

Our day also included a buggy ride through the country side and dinner at a smorgasbord restaurant. The ride and the food were both wonderful. It probably would have been better for me to have more ride and less food but that is okay.

So, how was your day?

Lancaster County

Today we arrived in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. It was in the afternoon, and we haven't done much but a bit of shopping and a great smorgasbord dinner. While shopping I found a yarn shop and got yarn for 3 more pairs of socks to treat myself with. I got a lovely gray, a beautiful root beer brown and a deep red. All the yarn is 75% merino and 25 % nylon which I hope means they should be not only comfortable but long wearing too.

We may go on a buggy ride tomorrow and possibly combine that with a farm tour. We shall see. Right now, I think we all just want to work on digesting a very big and delicious dinner.

Going Upstate

We have moved on from the City to Upstate New York. There is family here related to my husband for us to see for the first time in about 8 or 9 years. We spent yesterday afternoon and evening with them and had a lovely time.

Today will be more of the same but we will visit while going out and about to places Jim spent time at when young. We will also be paying our respects to long gone family members at 2 different cemeteries.

A New York Kind of Day

There is a very good chance that later today I will be seeing this very site among many other things. That is, if we can figure out trains and such. We westerners aren't up on all this kind of transportation, but we can learn.

Yesterday was also my youngest child's birthday. All my children are in their 40s now. That makes me feel old but it is what it is.

First Ever Wagyu Steak

I, like many others, have heard of Wagyu beef. Of course I wondered if it was worth all the expense and money. Yesterday I had my first chance to find out.

I am no food critic and I am a functional cook who manages to keep us alive. My son cooks great things as a hobby, and he treated us to this dinner. He did a reverse sear method with this steak. This steak was a 2 pound thick monster. It was started out on his Treager smoker and finished in a cast iron skillet for a nice sear on the outside. The steak was extremely tender and very juicy and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The flavor was mild and not as beefy as other steaks I have had but very good. I don't know if that explanation works for anyone but me but I don't have other words to describe it.

So, IMHO, it was a lovely treat for a special dinner but not necessarily something I would ever crave or have very often even if price was no object. Have you ever tried it Wagyu beef? Let me know in the comments about your experience.

Turtle or Just a Lump?

This piece of wood has a background. It was found on the shores of Jackson Lake. We all were reminded of a turtle when we saw it and it came home and now lives on a coffee table in a living room. It is a memory of a very nice time with family on the lake.

Do you have random things in your home that bring back memories or great times?

The Undertaker's Assistant by Amanda Skenandore

I finished a great story last night before going to sleep. This time the book was written by Amanda Skenandore. My one whine here is that this book has one of those titles that I think are just silly. The title in full is The Undertaker's Assistant: A Captivating Post-Civil War Era Novel of Southern Historical Fiction. Oh really?!

Okay whine over, the book was captivating. This author has written several books and I plan on reading more of her works. She is an excellent storyteller. She was able to blend the past and present of the main character, Effie, in a dare I say captivating way that kept the story moving forward and the reader more than ready to find out what came next.

I got this book through Prime Reading from our family Prime membership, but it is also available as a paperback. I highly recommend it.

A Finished Book, Actually 3

I just finished a book that was actually 3 books in one. Titled Spies Among Us by Agatha Christie this volume includes They Came to Bagdad, N or M?, and Murder in Mesopotamia. This book was published in 1968 but the spy novels included were published in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

I loved every minute of reading these books, the plot twists and turns, leaving the whodunit answer to the very end. Of the 3, I think my favorite was N or M? that included the characters of a husband and wife spy team who found out they weren't too old to be useful during World War II after having many adventures and being a great help to their country during the previous war. They were so charming and believable.

I really haven't read many Christie books and I think I need to change that. So, what about you? Are you a Agatha Christie fan? Do you have a favorite book or character?

On This Day 2014

On this day in 2014 I was living in Jackson Wyoming. I was at home taking pictures of a scarf I knitted. This one was created from a discontinued Red Heart yarn named Symphony. I liked the way these photos turned out and this scarf was listed on a now discontinued site named Zibbet. Anyone remember that place? All of us that joined had such high hopes for a good Etsy replacement, but it didn't happen. Many Etsy sellers went there in frustration after Chad Dickerson changed the definition of handmade to include "designed by with production partners" which has led in part to the current large number of resellers and print on demand t shirt shops.

Anyway, about the picture that I liked best of that day...

You can see that the yarn made a light fabric. It drapes well and with the fluffiness of the yarn scarves made from this are light and still warm. I have some others in different colors too. Some day they should all be on line but not now. I have decided that since Jim likes to travel so often I am throwing in the towel on the idea of opening a shop and then putting it in vacation mode a few times a year. At our age we may not be traveling this much forever so my time will come later.

The beauty of this thinking is that I plan on doing a lot more "just for me" crafting. That is the reason for the sock project and the plans to start making more of my own clothes. I have lots of quilts and sweaters in my mind waiting to be done as well. I will always have something to work on. It has been that way my whole life and as long as my hands and eyes work it will always be that way.

Football on Sunday

During this time of year Sundays are very predictable. It is the day we just do nothing much except watch football games. The first starts about 10 am, next are the 2 pm games followed by Sunday Night Football. Jim watches the games more than I do. I use the time to knit or read and glance at the games I might care about.

First up for the morning, shortly after I get this posted is a morning walk. Our neighborhood is nicely landscaped and the flowers you see here are part of it. Forgive the lousy phone picture please. This little bush with the bright flowers is such a delight for the eyes. I have no idea what the name of this is, I just know I like it.

Do you have something that you like about where you live? That small kind of thing the makes your neighborhood just a bit more special or pleasant? Please share with a comment. I know I beg for comments but they are so nice to get unless they are spam. Those get deleted.

Anyway, have a wonderful day.
