New Sewing Supplies

I ordered some fresh supplies from Amazon for my goal of reviving my sewing hobby. They arrived yesterday. One of the things I ordered was a set of tailor's chalks. (affiliate link).

I still need to take the time to shop for fabrics. I think I said before that I plan to start with pants and capris. I need a good fit that is easy to pull on. I don't feel at this point in my life that I need to stuff myself into uncomfortable jeans. I also, by sewing my own, get out of spending dreadful time in store dressing rooms on a search for the perfect fit. These are all wins in my mind.

When I get going on these projects I will keep you posted right here. I may even learn how to do the bathroom mirror selfie to I can keep track of fit and the progress of remaking my wardrobe.

I tried the chalks on a bit of fabric. Anyone reading like snowmen as much as I do? Any way these chalks seem to mark well and smoothly with very little pressure needed. You can see my test on that cute bit of Christmas fabric.

I'll leave things here for now. Time to get my retweet favors done, then shower and do a few chores. I might even get in some sock knitting time and some time to finish the book I am reading.

We are getting together with neighbors tonight for card games.  I am really looking forward to this evening.

Back with more again soon.

Handmade, with a Laser

This, in the picture, is something my sister Karen made. She has one of those laser machines and can decorate darn near anything. This is a round piece of slate. She put little felt feet on the back to protect whatever you put it on.  On the back also is a personal message to me. It was such a nice gift and will always be in my kitchen.

Do you have a personal gift in your home that you can see every day that brings good feelings when you do? Leave a comment, would love to hear all about it.

Trying Again

I used to sew clothing. Not well necessarily but wearable. I made things for myself and my children. The kids did not always like homemade clothes, especially my oldest daughter, but I like to wear something that came from my own hands. I have decided that it is time to bring out the serger and sewing machine to sew for myself again. I am going to start with capris and pants. I have looked for patterns with elastic waists and pockets and have found a couple. The pattern shown from McCall's is what I am going to start with. With the life I live now that kind of easy fit is perfect. I'm not as skinny as the model and never will be but I think this will work fine. I am going to make the wider leg version first.

To get going I have ordered some tailor's chalk and elastic on Amazon and they will be here tomorrow. I also ordered some tracing paper so I can make copies of the pattern and keep the tissue paper in good shape for future reference. With the cost of patterns these days it seems like a good idea. I am old enough to remember patterns sales at $1.99 with a limit of 5 at Hancock's Fabrics.

I know, I'm old but I did put another walking souvenir pinecone in my basket this morning.

Los Gringos Locos

In a simple life the most everyday things can be a cause for happiness and excitement. Today, for lunch, we are going to Los Gringos Locos with neighbors. It is one of our favorite restaurants and the food is always great and the service is always friendly.

A morning walk has been finished this morning. A bit shorter than yesterday at about 3.5 miles. So here I am writing this post and cooling down before my shower and going to lunch.

There is a Republican debate this evening. I can't see myself ever voting for any of them but on the random chance that one of them will actually be running for office because you know who is disqualified or in jail, it is nice to know how they think about things. I am a vote blue kind of person and see no reason to change that.

Canisters Shared

With full disclosures and affiliate links at the end of each post and sometimes like today in the post, you know that I share things so that if someone clicks a link and then purchases in the next 30 days, I can get a small commission. I try to find interesting or pretty or themed to a time or seasonal items to share. I actually keep a list of ideas to match up with items on Amazon or eBay to share with my X (formerly known as Twitter) followers.

Today from my list I am using "canisters" and I think I found some nice canister sets to share later on X. Take a look at what I found on Amazon and eBay this morning.

From Amazon I found this pretty glass set that is dishwasher safe. The pattern on the glass would work in any style of kitchen and reviews about their beauty and the seal are all great.

On eBay I took my canister search in a different direction. I went looking for vintage canister sets and the 4 piece canister set I found is one that I really like. In my mind the best way to shop on eBay is to look for highly rated sellers to see what they have. The canister set I found is vintage and from a seller rated at 100%. The seller does a great job of showing exactly what you are getting including measurements and condition. Keep in mind when you look that this is a vintage set and had a real life before we came along to see it. See if you like this set as much as I do.

So, what do you think? One old set for your kitchen or one new? Which would you prefer? Leave a comment, say hello, let me know how you are doing. Comments are like treasures to a blogger like me.

Sunday and a Pinecone

After a day of sloth because of vaccination side effects and football I went for a walk this morning with Jim. I am over my headache and low grade fever so it was time to get out there again. My plan is to get this man moving and to keep myself in good shape too, of course. Win - win, right?

We got kind of a late start so after 3.5 miles it was getting warm, and it was time for me to head home. He likes to wander and that is what we did. I admit to feeling lost a couple times but eventually we came out on a main road, and I knew my way home from there, so I felt oriented again. He felt like a winner because he went a bit further after I turned for home. It's all good and I did manage to get a pinecone for my basket. This is a rather pretty one, don't you think so?

Yesterday we watched the historic Dolphins Broncos game first and then in the afternoon we saw the Cardinals beat the Cowboys. Of course, we ended with Sunday Night Football and the Steelers win. We are kind of limited with Sling. We can see the ESPN games using Sling and on Thursday we watch the game on Amazon Prime Video. For the games on the national networks like NBC, ABC or CBS we watch with an antenna and only get the games they broadcast in our area. I don't mind. Did you watch any football this weekend? Do you have a favorite team?

How I'm Feeling and Knitting Progress

After yesterday's walk the day got worse. I ended up with a pounding headache and a low fever. This morning these symptoms are much better but I have decided to take a rest day anyway. I'll be ready for morning walks again starting tomorrow, I am sure.

It is also a football watching day and I will hopefully feel good enough to continue progress on my sock. You can see I have started the twisted 3 by 3 ribbing. That is, according to the pattern, what will make this tube sock fit well. I certainly hope so.

This is the most knitting I have ever done on double pointed needles. I feel more comfortable with that process now. I am thinking however that I may try a pair using the magic loop method on circular needles. What I am wondering is if the pinhole cast on will be easier on the circs than the double pointed needles.

Another Walk

Jim walked with me again. When I go on my own, I stay on the main road with nice wide sidewalks through my neighborhood. Letting him lead the way he kept taking off on side streets. He said it wasn't boring like my way is. Well, if it gets the man up and moving, I'll do different because that is the goal. Each day so far, he has gone a bit farther. Today was 3.5 miles. I did get another pinecone to add to my basket.

I saw the metal dinosaur in someone's yard on this morning's walk. He was just hanging out trying to look mean. LOL.

In other family news we got Covid and Flu shots yesterday afternoon. One of them in each arm and both arms are sore this morning, mostly when I try to raise them over shoulder height. It should only last a day or so and I can deal with that vs being hospitalized for either one of those diseases.

When it comes to vaccines, I'm not even gonna ask. You do you and I hope that means taking good care of yourself with the idea that doing that helps those around you too.

Elephant Appreciation Day September 22nd

Started in 1996, September 22nd is National Elephant Appreciation Day. Concern around the world continues since poachers still kill elephants every day for the ivory in their tusks. Hopefully this can be stopped before this very special animal disappears from its wild homelands in Asia and Africa.

If you would like to know more about elephants NationalDayCalendar.com has some book recommendations. One of them is The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. The following quote is from the description of this book on Amazon.
"The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere."

I am sharing 2 sources for this book today. One from Amazon for a new book and if you are frugal, like I tend to be, a used book from a highly rated seller in eBay. The choice is yours and these, in full disclosure, are affiliate links.

Wide Awake

I typically sleep very well. This week however has been a bit different. I have been waking up about 3 or 4, wide awake, trying to keep my mind clear and drift back off and failing. So here I am this morning at 4:10 am writing here. I know I can break this cycle by taking Benadryl at bedtime. When I do that, I sleep till about 6 or 7 and that is too late if I want to walk at sunrise and write my daily post and have a cup of coffee before my walk. I'll get it figured out eventually.

I also spent a minute to create the image that goes with today's post. This search was a full moon in a starry sky over a desert landscape. I think it is pretty and once again a quick minute with Bing Image Creator gave me what was in my head.

So, what advice can you give me about staying asleep? I go to sleep easily; I just wake up about an hour too early.

Walking and Reading

I did take that morning walk yesterday as the sun came up. I picked up not one but two pinecones. Jim said he may go with me this morning, we'll see about that.

In other news, I finished a book. This time it was The Dry Grass of August: A Moving Southern Coming of Age Novel (affiliate link) written by Anna Jean Mayhew. Is it just me or do others think the way I do. I kind of find it silly to put a colon and an explanation or the book at the end of a title. It does seem to be a trend among authors these days. Can I just say to current authors that the best of them in the old days didn't need to do that. Consider For Whom the Bell Tolls: A Novel or Treasure Island: A Novel or The Good Earth: A Novel of China. Silly, right? The best of them didn't do that so just stop it. Let your best story tell the reader what it is. If you have to explain it first it makes the title seem weaker to me.

Now about the book. The story was from the point of view of a young teen and her family. Brutality and racism and family tragedy and disfunction were mixed up in cruel and deadly ways in this story and it kept the pages turning chapter after chapter.

The sun is not up yet but I found myself wide awake. Since I am on a mission to blog daily here I am. I have something else planned as soon as the sun comes up. It is now cool enough in the mornings to go out and take a walk through my neighborhood and that is what I am going to do. I may even pick up a souvenir pinecone. It will be nicer that using my treadmill or pacing in the house.

By the way the picture is not my neighborhood. I made the image with Bing Image Creator. I still have fun playing with that tool sometimes. Have you used it or another AI image maker? Share your thoughts in a comment. I would love to hear from you.

Sock Progress

Football season is lovely. It is a time of year when every Sunday I park a husband in front of games all day long. I pretend to watch too while I work on my latest project all day. I keep the food fast and easy, not always so healthy but so what, and do no chores about the house. I will make up for that today.

I finished the toe section of plain knitting yesterday. I have started on the twisted rib that will be on the foot and the calf of this sock. The theory for this pattern is that the twisted rib will help the sock cling to you when it needs to and stretch to fit when it has to. I sure hope this works.

Junk in the Trunk

Yesterday Jim and I spent a couple hours wandering through Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market at West World in Scottsdale. We didn't buy anything but saw a lot of amazing handmade and vintage things. Today is the last day for this show but as you can see from the picture there is another one in April 2024. Be prepared, if you go, to pay for parking and pay to get in the show. It is irritating but it is what it is, and I suppose necessary to cover costs of such a high quality show. All the booths were busy with lookers and buyers so that is a very good thing for the vendors since it cost them about $500 for the 3 day show. I know that because I checked out the web site linked at the beginning of this paragraph.

Today I will be working on my sock while watching football games with Jim. What do you have planned for this day?

Just to brag on myself a bit. Yesterday was 3 months of blogging daily. I know that these posts are not deep compelling essays meant to please anyone who drops by. This blog is meant to be a memory saver for me and a conversation starter and safe place if you would like to chat. So, if you are so inclined leave a comment, say hello. I'd love to hear from you. It doesn't look like much yet but it's a start. A long and frustrating but I got it done start. This friend is the toe of a sock. I clumsily learned how to do a pinhole cast on. I needed that cast on rather than one for a flat toe because this will be a tube sock. With no heel to turn and a toe with no top or bottom you can even out the wear around the whole foot of the sock. I am excited to see this finish. I am also struggling with feeling clumsy using the double pointed needles but that feels easier with every round. The little green stitch marker tells me that those stitches are the first in each round. It will serve to keep me on track in the pattern.

This yarn is sole Red Heart yarn called Heart and Sole. I am trying out the pattern using this yarn before I use the precious and expensive yarn hand dyed yarns I bought in Colorado this summer. Wish me luck!

6 Year Ago, A Wedding

It was 6 years ago today that my son got married for the second time. The wedding was outdoors and casual. The bride and groom actually wore jeans and so did most of the rest of us. All of their children were there and between them they have 8. Both sets of parents, his and hers were able to be there. Her parents and one of the bride's sisters had to come all the way from Calgary, Canada but they made it. It was a fun group and a lovely day.

They have not always had it easy since then but they are still together and that is good. The first of their children is getting married soon. It seems that time flies so fast!

A Sister's Birthday

My Mom had 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys. I am the oldest. The sister next to me in age is having a birthday today. I hope today is full of fun and laughter for her. I will send her a text later and maybe a call to let her know I am thinking of her.

She is a very creative person. Where I love hand work when I create, she is more mechanical although she does know how to knit and crochet. She has created with cameras, sewing machines, embroidery machines, sandblasting, and lately laser engraving. She has all the toys and knows how to use them. Sometimes I envy those skills she has but then I remind myself how content I am to sit quietly and knit for a couple hours in an afternoon. I remind myself how boring it would be if we were all the same.

We are also great readers and spend part of every day with a book. When we were taking care of Mom and her house earlier this year, we found out that we share an appreciation for the offerings that Prime Reading has. We didn't know it before but found out we both had read several books by Catherine Ryan Hyde and liked them very much. All 5 of us are readers and in a busy, chaotic world I am glad that we have that in common, even if there is little else.

Somehow all 3 of us girls have ended up in Arizona a few hours from each other in retirement. This is the closest we 3 have lived to each other in many years. So far it has been a great comfort to have my sisters closer and I think they feel the same.

So, after a bit of babbling, I wish you a happy birthday Sis, and many more!

Two Movies on Tuesday

With no football to watch on a Tuesday night, we watched a couple movies after dinner. Jim chose the first one we watched on Amazon Prime Video, Rumor Has It. This movie was a cute look at what could have happened to all the characters in the years after The Graduate. In the end the father character told the daughter what she needed to know, and the right guy ended up with the girl.

I chose the second movie of the night. We watched The Last Laugh. This was a great movie about getting old and facing your death. Nothing sad here though, at least not for long. Chevy Chase and Richard Dreyfuss were wonderful as old friends who end up in the same assisted living place. They take off on a grand cross country adventure. There are some great belly laugh moments in this one. Too bad that by this time Jim was dozing in his recliner.

In creative news I finished a scarf and started another. These are both crocheted and made with Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, colorway Prism. Both are Lion Brand Patterns. Maybe I will get some pictures taken to share here soon.

In a Hurry

We are well into the last month where the average temperature can be 100 degrees or more. By this time of year most people are proud of surviving another summer in the valley of the sun. It can still be 100 or more and that is still bad but if you have lived in the desert awhile you can tell the difference between 100 and 110 and that difference feels good.

I am a person in a hurry. We here in the Phoenix area know that we have lived through one of the hottest and driest summers ever. I want to hurry up and get past this time because I know that the cooler times are coming. By the time November comes around and lasting till about April, we remind ourselves that this lovely winter is why so many of us are here including the snowbirds.

Not having anything else to post about today I chose the weather. I have written something every day since June 16th, nearly 3 months. That is the most consecutive days for a long time, and I feel good about this accomplishment.

I played with Bing's Image Creator today to create the image for today's post about weather in the desert. Have you ever played with this or another AI image creator?

Above the Bay of Angels by Rhys Bowen

Last night on my Kindle I finished a book I had borrowed from Amazon Prime. Did you know that if you have a Prime membership (affiliate link to a list of benefits) you can have up to 10 books at a time from the Prime library? There are thousands of books rotating through with something to read for everyone. You don't have to have a Kindle either. You can use the Kindle app on any phone or tablet. I use both apps and a Kindle depending on where I am when time for reading happens.

So last night reading before sleep came, I finished Above the Bay of Angels by Rhys Bowen. It was a charming story of a young woman who finds love and a sense of purpose in her life. Along the path of the story she solves a murder mystery too. I like the way this author develops characters and they way she has them interact. One of my favorites in the book was the French Chef. In the end he was a typical but charming hero.

I'll leave it there because I don't want to spoil this book for anyone who is considering reading it for themselves.

So, if you have read this post so far, I have one last request. Leave a comment telling me what you are reading.

Saved On A Sunday: Some Shetland Lace

When I grow up as a knitter, I have a goal in mind. I want to do a masterpiece Shetland Lace Shawl. Those are traditionally very large garter stitch lace squares. A main lace body is knit and then a lace border is added on all four sides.

I found the pattern for the cowl you see below from Luba Chambers on Ravelry. Luba also has and Etsy shop which sells yarn and other knitting supplies. I am thinking that this could be a good starting project for knitting Shetland lace. One of the things that appeal to me about Shetland lace is that it is done in garter stitch. With the lovely squish factor of garter stitch and the delicate look of lace you get the best of both worlds in one project.

This cowl is waiting for me my favorites on Ravelry. I have a mountain of WIPs and saved patterns to be done some day. This will be put on the top of the mountain so I can try it sooner rather than later. I do need to look for the perfect yarn for this also because in my stash right now I don't have anything worthy of the effort.

If you are a creative type with busy hands and a busy mind, do you have something you want to do that will be a masterpiece lifetime major accomplishment? Put it out there to the universe in the comments. I would love to hear from you.

National Teddy Bear Day

What a nice day to think about, National Teddy Bear Day. This happens every year on September 9th. According to NationalDayCalendar.com no one knows who started the annual celebration day for Teddy Bears. The history of Teddy Bears we do know. The name is connected to President Teddy Roosevelt and a toy stuffed bear created by a New York store owner Morris Michtom.

Teddy Bears have a place in our childhood memories and our literature. Most of us grew up knowing about Winnie the Pooh and Paddington although for younger ones it may be from television and not books but that is okay.

So, did you have your own Teddy Bear growing up? I really don't remember having one myself but I do like the idea of having a soft stuffed toy to hug and drag around and maybe even tell your secrets to. Every child should have something like that.

First Game, New Season

Yesterday was a quiet Thursday. I actually took a nap. Maybe it was a let down from having company in the house for a week and always being busy, in a good way, but busy.

Jim had a doctor's appointment and it was good but a follow up chest x-ray has been ordered and will be done today. Just a little wheezing was heard. He is still and I am afraid always will be a smoker so got to keep an eye out for possible consequences of that habit.

In other news we watched the Detroit Lions beat the Kansas City Chiefs. With that game the football season has begun, and we will be watching games every week. After the game we watched one episode of the new season of Virgin River. Jim picks mostly movies for us to watch in the evenings after dinner but this is one series he likes.

So today I want to know, do you still watch football? Do you have a team you like to watch and root for? Let me know in the comments. Would love to hear from you!

Call The Midwife Season 12

With just Jim and I here, since both sisters have returned home, we started our after dinner video watching for me and the snoozing in his recliner, I am not sleeping, habit for him.

First the movie of the night was The Year of the Dog. There are a few shows with the same title. The one we watched was about an alcoholic and a stray dog saving each other with the help of friends. It was a good movie but not a great one, at least that is my very humble opinion.

After the movie was over and finding it still a bit early for going to bed, I watched the first episode of Season 12 of Call the Midwife. I love this show. Season 12 came to Netflix this month and I was so happy to see the new season banner on the icon in my list on Netflix. In the episode, which is all I have seen so far, Nurse Trixie Franklin gets engaged. Trixie also leads a father in pain and suffering from alcoholism to his first meetings so that he can find sobriety and be with his family in a better way. That was kind of the unintended theme for the night's video viewing, finding sobriety. There were also babies, there are always babies on Call the Midwife of course. I am looking forward to the rest of the season.

Have you got a show that you love and wait for the new season each year? Which streaming service is it on? As always, I would love for you to leave a comment.

September Birthdays

It is September, as you are most likely aware, I admit to double checking the calendar because how could it be so late in the year already?

We have some birthdays in the family this month including one of my sisters, a daughter in law and a nephew. I truly do hope they have lovely days.

This month the birthstone is sapphire, and the flowers are aster or morning glory. If you are interested, please take a moment to see what I found on Zazzle, eBay and Amazon Handmade that are all about the beauty of the morning glory flower. Being fully transparent these will be affiliate links and I could earn a small commission if you click and then make a qualifying purchase. The choice is yours. The gratitude is mine.

From Zazzle...
Isn't this a lovely keychain?

From eBay...
I found a signed limited edition print by artist Mary Ann Vessey.

From Amazon Handmade...
Birthday month or not wouldn't you like this suncatcher in your home?

A Surprising Day Ahead

My sister thinks her husband is coming to pick her up today. He and my husband plank for him to spend the night so they can go play in a nearby casino. We also have an estimator coming this morning to give us some numbers for redoing the upstairs bathroom.

I also have some bananas needing to be used so I need to get busy making some banana bread,

Monday, Start of the Week

One of my sisters is still here. She will leave tomorrow. It has been nice having guests in the house. Yesterday we did get to the swap meet. As for Jim and I we looked at tub replacement for our upstairs bath and have an estimator coming on Tuesday morning. We also looked at patio furniture, thinking we might like to get some chairs that would last longer than the folding chairs we have out there now. Things to ponder later.

Swap Meet Sunday

The title says it all. There is a big swap meet not far from the house. The plan is to go early this morning and wander through it for a few hours. We will be heading home before it gets too hot. None of us have any planned purchases to make. We are using the outing mainly to get off our backsides and out for a bit of walking. We old folks got to keep moving.

Good morning. Yesterday with a sister included a trip to Joann's. All of us sew among all our other hobbies. There were some great sales on fabrics, and I have wanted for a while to make some of my own clothes. I bought two patterns. One was for pull on pants with pockets that included shorts and capri length in two different leg styles. The other pattern is pictured along with the line art. It is a dress with different lengths and different sleeve options. The waist is raised and in the back the yoke or I guess bodice is curved. I thought that feature was pretty. I also like that the skirt is pleated rather than gathered. When will I actually do any sewing? Who knows!

Finally Rain

One sister headed home yesterday and got there safely. One will be here through the weekend. During some Netflix time before bed, watching New Amsterdam, it started to rain. We had some wind along with it and the temperature dropped about 20 degrees. It was all so nice.

We don't have any ambitious plans for the Labor Day weekend. Do you ?
