Coming Soon!

I know, I know Valentine's Day is nearly a month away. But holy cow it is only a month away! With so many of us shopping online and shipping times not as predictable as they used to be because so many are shopping online the time to think about gifts or home decor for this upcoming special day is getting critical. If you are considering a personalized gift from a maker on a place like Etsy the time is now!

Last week on Twitter I started sharing Valentine's Day finds from my affiliate connections on EBay, Society 6, Zazzle and Amazon Handmade. If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen some of these.

 


As I said the links in these tweets are for affiliates. I could earn a small commission if you click on one of them and then do some shopping at the site. This would cost you nothing and could in a small way keep my husband from knowing how much I spend on yarn so we can have a Happy Valentine's Day too. Thanks!

Flowers As Gifts, Yes or No?


Beautiful, aren't they? For Valentine's Day and Easter my husband sent me flowers. They are lovely but if asked I might have made other choices or given him a few ideas. Christmas seems to go much the same. He says get yourself something and I think that's not quite right either. If I order or shop for a gift myself for myself that doesn't feel as if it actually is a gift. I guess I should be pleased he remembered the day. With Mother's Day coming up I wonder what color the flowers will be. 

I worked with someone who got flowers and she told her husband she didn't like them because they died. She realized after many years of marriage and strange gifts that she might have prefered flowers after all.

I have asked for things to decorate the house and was told those aren't appropriate. The ideas I gave needed to be personal but they didn't realize my home is personal to me.

The flowers come. Most of the time they smell wonderful. All of the time they look beautiful. I will say thank you and take pictures. Then I will have a new vase to keep for dust collecting or give away.

So today the question is do you like to get flowers as a gift? Would you prefer other things or are you at that time in life when there is really nothing more you want?

Memorable Valentine's Day

The Valentine's Day of 2004 will stand out in the minds of much of our family for a long time.

A couple days before the holiday Jim and I were at a Flying J Truck stop in Lakepoint, Utah to get something to eat. This is a rather rural area about 25 miles from Salt Lake City. As we were getting seated the waitress who knew our family asked where our granddaughter was. She along with her Mom and Dad had meals there with us fairly often. The granddaughter is usually chatty, smiling and friendly so every one gets to know her.

Jim starts to call them to see if they want to join us and his phone rings. It is our son in law who says they have been in an accident on the way home from Walmart and it looks really bad for the other car. Without asking any more questions we leave the restaurant and go to where they are about 8 miles away.

The other vehicle was a small pickup. It had slid across the center line of the road as snow was beginning to fall and was t-boned by the Durango my daughter was driving. The truck ended up in two pieces on the side of the road. The Durango was totaled.

As it all turned out thanks to seat belts, air bags and car seats everyone in this accident was banged up and scared but okay. Every one took a ride to the hospital to get checked out and then we took daughter, son in law and granddaughter home.

The reason they were at Walmart in the first place was to get Valentines for the granddaughter to hand out to classmates at Kindergarten. When she came home from school on Valentine's Day guess what was in the bottom of her backpack? You got it, the valentines! She was so excited looking at the ones she was receiving that she forgot to hand hers out.
