thinking about it

I have been thinking about new glasses for awhile now and considering my options for getting the best results at a good price. There are places online for ordering your eyeglasses and generally the cost is less than in the brick and mortar shops you find in malls or at an eye doctor's office.

The two types of sellers, local and online seem are at odds with each other though. The online sellers of prescription eye wear need certain measurements to give you the results that will work for your comfort and vision. An eye doctor or the place in the mall takes these measurements as part of an exam with the expectation that you will purchase your glasses from them. It does cost a bit more but you get personal service. They are reluctant to give all these details to a customer and have them walk out the door to buy somewhere else.

My question to you is as follows. Are those measurements part of a prescription that should be handed to you so that you can shop for your new glasses where you like or is it a bit like getting your feet measured in one store to buy your shoes somewhere else?

  1. Aren't glasses expensive? I have to have trifocals...it is ridiculous. I'll be anxiously awaiting what others have to say!

  2. I can't answer your question. The only measurements I can recall being taken is the distance from the center of one eye to center of the other eye, measuring how far apart your eyes are, then how far up your bifocal or trifocal should come to allow you to see straight away with out interference. Again, I don't know. What struct me about your post and your question is this. I never in my wildest imaginations would I have thought anyone would/ could/or would want to, buy glasses on line. It's a brave new world we live in and somehow I missed the advent.
